How do I resolve a visitor?

FAQ

A. By resolving a visitor you will usually be able to determine the name, location, and telephone number of the organization responsible for the computer used by the individual who hit your page. You will not be able to determine any information about the individual.

At this time you can only resolve visitors from the North America, Europe (which includes the Middle East) and Japan. In other areas the service is unreliable.

You can resolve a visitor in two ways. You can use the IP address (which looks like this: 153.34.48.169), or the domain name (which looks like this: ibex.com, or perhaps like this: cc-1.cambridge.gov.uk). Whichever you use, the process may take a few tries.

To use the IP address, find it in its own column in your "Last up to 50 Visits" table. First try copying the first three components of the IP address into the "Resolve Visitor" window - either North America, Europe or Japan. Do not include the last dot. If this does not succeed, try using just the first two components.

If you wish to use the domain name, it can be found in the "Visitor" column. Often you should use only part of the domain name.

Here are some examples of domain names indicating which parts should be copied to the "Resolve Visitor" window.
